BICYCLE USER GROUPS – PUBLIC LIABILITY INSURANCE
NSW Bicycle User Groups are affiliated with Bicycle NSW and are therefore covered by Bicycle NSW public liability insurance. This means that if a BUG holds a social ride or conducts an activity, its members are protected under this insurance if they are sued as a result of (a) injury to someone participating in the ride or event, or injured as a result of the event (eg if a participant hits a pedestrian), or (b) damage to property (eg running into a parked car or someone’s fence).
The person responsible for the injury or damage is covered by this insurance as long as he or she is participating under the directions of the Ride Leader or Event Organiser. If this participant is breaking the law (eg riding on the wrong side of the road) or riding contrary to the directions of the Ride Leader (eg riding ahead of the group or taking a different route) then no insurance cover will apply. If the participant leaves a ride before it is finished and hits someone or something on the way home then likewise no cover applies.
The participant does not have to be a member of the Bicycle User Group or a member of Bicycle NSW to participate in the event or social ride. However, the full name and address of the participant must be recorded in a Ride Register for insurance purposes before the ride.
In order for a ride or event to be covered, Bicycle NSW needs to have prior notification two weeks beforehand. Please contact Christine Porter, the Ride Coordinator, on 6332 4179 or at winnedge@ix.net.au with details of your ride.
It is strongly recommended that Ride Leaders are members of Bicycle NSW to ensure that they have personal public liability cover. Public liability cover protects other people or property and does not apply if, for example, the Ride Leader sustains an injury and cannot go to work for three weeks. If you ride regularly, Personal Accident Insurance (available to Bicycle NSW members for $27.50 per person per year) is a very cost effective way to make sure you have income protection in the event of an accident.
Bicycle NSW
Membership - Insurance Policies
As a member of Bicycle NSW you have available to you a range of insurance
policies, incase of the unexpected.
Public Liability Insurance
Every Bicycle New South Wales member is covered under our Public Liability policy. This type of cover applies in the case where you injure another person or damage property while riding. The most common claims of this nature involve a cyclist hitting a pedestrian or damaging a car. Many cyclists do not realise until it’s too late that the injured person, or owner of the car may hold them responsible and seek financial compensation.
Bicycle New South Wales provides $20 million cover, with
an excess of $1000. $20 million may seem excessive, but Public Liability claims
can be extremely large and financially devastating if you are not insured.
Personal Accident Insurance
Bicycle New South Wales offers insurance for members who injure themselves in a cycling accident. There are weekly benefits if you require time off work as well as lump sum payments for serious injury.
Personal Accident cover costs an additional $27.50 per year for an individual and $44 per year for a family.
